2019 Greendale Napier Club 60th Anniversary Spring Meet 12-13 October
4 very keen and committed Mt Wellington swimmers (Liam Marks, Amos, Elijah and Caleb Yin) travelled down to Napier (or up from Wellington in the Yin’s case) for the Greendale Swimming Club 60th Anniversary Spring Meet during the weekend. With over 200 entries from all round Hawkes Bay. BOP, Wairarapa and even Wellington (and Auckland of course) and only 6 lanes, we were a bit worried that the meet would drag on. No worries! This meet was one of the most efficiently run I have come across and both sessions finished ahead of schedule.
The Saturday session started with Liam (2.26sec) and Amos (1.82sec) setting good PB’s in the 100IM. Caleb swam brilliant 50 & 100 breast – in heats filled with 13 & 14 year olds – to set times less than one second away from the Auckland 9 and under records, currently held by arch-rival Luke Karena.
Also in session one, Liam set PB’s in the 50 free (1.57sec) and 200 free (2.80sec). Elijah swam extremely well in the 200 free to be right on his PB and Caleb again set a PB in the 50 fly (0.34sec).
Session 2 on Sunday morning saw Amos swim brilliantly in the 100 free for an excellent PB (59.49sec). Elijah continued his good form to be just 0.04 away from his 100 free PB and only 2 sec from a Level 1 time. Not long now Elijah!
Liam swam his first competitive 400 free for a solid time and completed a good 2.28 sec PB in the 100 free. The highlight of this session was energizer man Caleb’s 100 fly (2.60PB) and 200IM (2.93PB). His IM time puts him less than 2 secs away from the 9 and under Auckland record, which has stood since 1983!
What a great meet for everyone! We ended with four 1st place medals (all Caleb), two 2nd place medals (Amos & Liam) and two 3rd place medals (Liam and Elijah). Also with 10 PB’s (Caleb & Liam four each, Amos two), this was a very worthwhile exercise, despite the travelling distance.
