12-13th Dec 2020 Counties Manukau regional junior champs

What an exciting Championships this was. With 211 swimmers, their team managers and supporters seating, in the wonderful Diocesan pool, was tight but just enough.

With 19 swimmers (16 from the Development and Junior squads), Mount Wellington were the second team in size behind the 83 strong HPK team, who were sporting their new HPK Racing livery.

Session 1

On Saturday Kento Wangford, Caden Fuatimau and Gariad Chan ‘opened the batting’ with Gold medals in the 50 fly along with Ryan Slater with a Silver medal.

This set the scene for the day and we ended with 13 Gold, 6 Silver and 5 Bronze medals.

Ruby Li picked up her 1st medal in the 11-year olds 100 IM, (although we are not quite sure how this could be) and Eric Chen also picked up his first medal (silver) in the 100 breast, remarkable, as he has only just returned to swimming after a long absence.

Session 2

Sunday was not quite so prolific with the team down to 15 but it did see Angus Wilson (Gold in 200 breast), Jonathan Bao, recovered from 2 DQ’s, to get a silver in the 50 back, Liam Jones (silver in 200 Free) and Alina Chen (bronze in the 50 back) picking up their first medals.

In total the team scored 39 medals, (17 Gold, 11 Silver, 11 Bronze) with 30 coming from the Development and Junior Squad swimmers.

With 17 of our swimmers picking up medals this was a great performance from our team.

(See the table below for the full list of medals.)

Star of the meet, for Mount Wellington, was undoubtably Kento Wangford who took home 6 Gold medals. A lazy touch in the 100 Fly denying him a 100% sweep, followed closely by Gariad Chan with 5 Gold medals, these from only one day of racing.

Some other performances worth a mention were Liam Jones (4th) and James Whitely (6th) in the 12 and under 400 freestyle with James taking 12.12 second off the time he set at the 400’s and 50’s meet on 1 November. Also, Alina Chen winning her first medal in the hotly contested 10 and under age group with a 6.85 second PB and Mylan Zou who was right behind her in 4th place in the 50 backstroke.

Four swimmers: Caden Fuatimau, Toby Schuller, James Whiteley and Nolan Zou scored 100% Pb’s and there were 77 PB’s in total (75%).

Our Team Managers and timekeepers were kept busy as the racing was fast and furious and our thanks go to: Jielin Chan and Janet Fuatimau (Team Managers on Saturday), Amy Gao and Caroline Yu (Team Managers for Sunday) and Helen Bao, Atsuko Carter, Penny Roberts, Amy Lin, Mark McIntosh, Chantelle Schuller, Karen Slater and Seiko Whiteley; our timekeepers over the 2 days.
